As a child growing up in a very structured church, a sacred place looked like my church. The rows of pews surrounding the altar, as well as the body of Jesus on the cross displayed prominently behind the altar, were all tangible signs that this was a sacred place. A hush always greeted you as you entered the church doors and it was understood that your actions would match the reverence that reverberated through the room.
As a seeker, I began to question if God could only be found in the sacred boundaries of the church building. Were the common themes of how the physical space was laid out as well as the crucifix, sacred music, pews and altar necessary pieces to creating all sacred spaces? Was it possible to enter into other spaces and still find God’s presence?
